Our Third Anniversary

Beginning with year one of our marriage I decided I wanted to try and take a photo of Chris and I each year on our anniversary. I am already loving being able to compare Team Baker from each year; what we looked like and how our family has grown.

Year One

Such babies we were! Ha, just us and Baxter. We should have included our furry first baby in our photo, though now that I know what it’s like to wrangle kids for a photo I am glad we opted for a ‘no puppy photo’ the first year so I don’t feel pressured to have him in it every year. It’s much easier to use my supremely awesome photo shop skills to add him in later if we choose, like this…

Aniversary 1

yes, he is in fact wearing a birthday boy hat in this photo.

Baxter’s birthday is the same month and year as our anniversary, so it’s always easy to remember how old he is…or how long we’ve been married… or neither in my case.

Year Two

Last year a 2 month old Charlotte had added!

You can read more about our first and second anniversary photos + a bit about our wedding day here and here.

Year Three

2013october5

First of all, I just have to say that I am totally distracted by the fact that I am standing on the left in these photos instead of the right like in the previous 2 year’s photos. Totally a first-world problem. I just had to get it out. Whew, moving on.

The wedding-arch-thing is still standing. My dad built it for our wedding and I am still so amazed by how beautiful it was and that it is still {sort of} standing in the woods in their backyard.

2013october3

At the time that these photos were taken we still had our first foster squish. I am so glad my mom took these pictures and I couldn’t resist posting this one {with a little mustache censoring to protect squish’s privacy} because it makes me so happy to see how far God has brought us over the past 3 years.
2013october11

I pray that the next 50 years creep by; I don’t want to miss a minute of them by being too busy or rushed.

Charlie Grace is 12 months old

Charlotte is now 12 months old {I prefer to label her age in months and will continue to do so as long as I can in an effort to ignore the fact that she is, in fact, getting older}.

At 12 months, Charlotte:

  • Weighs 17 lbs {10th percentile}, is 27 inches long {42nd percentile}
  • Is beginning to take a few wobbly steps {though as I’m finally writing this, she is practically running now}
  • Is learning to turn around backwards to climb down stairs/off ledges
  • Can feed herself with a spoon {though prefers her hands} and is now refusing to be fed anything via spoon by mommy or daddy and will turn her head away if we try {I just want to keep her clothes clean, is that too much to ask??}
  • Loves to give her baby doll hugs, particularly when others are watching and applauding… such a little performer… though once she get’s an ‘awww’ from mommy, baby is thrown to the floor. We’ll work on that.
  • Says: hi, bye bye, daddy, up, all done, thank you, ball, baby, balloon, book, Baxter {though ball, Baxter, and balloon all sounds the same right now}
  • Can sign: open, more, eat, please {her favorite right now is ‘please’}
  • Points to everything, waves to everyone, claps, gives high fives, is learning to give kisses, plays peek-a-boo, and dances to music
  • Understands and can follow several directions: give it to me, sit down, put in, all done, clean up, don’t touch/no, nice hands/gentle

Here are Charlotte’s 12 month photos, taken by the talented Kelly Lewis.

I made Charlotte’s ‘smash cake’, and I am pretty proud of the end result.

Though I have to be honest, my initial cake trial looked like something from the website Cake Wrecks:

2013-07-26 20.21.49

Haha, I am still laughing at my attempt. I was trying to make a giant cupcake, but my efforts to also make the cake healthy and the frosting healthy resulted in a goopy mess. I ended up just using the base of the cake form and opted for peaked frosting instead of trying to smooth it out. To color the frosting I used beet juice {practically odorless and tasteless} to achieve the perfect pink!

Charlotte definitely enjoyed her first taste of the sugary goodness.

So proud of our big girl.

She is the sweetest, smartest, funniest baby around and we are so thankful to be her mommy and daddy.

Charlotte’s half-birthday

It’s only a months difference but 6 months sure seems ridiculously  older than 5 months. Charlotte was a trooper at her 6 month well-check.

She is now 26 inches tall and weighs 14 lbs 9 oz.

At 6 months, Charlotte:

  • Still loves reading with her daddy, and the ratio of ‘looking’ at the book compared to ‘eating’ the book is improving and these books may just survive long enough to see our next child.

  • Has begun her first parent-child class at The Little Gym of Chesapeake. She’s in the ‘Bugs’ class every Saturday.

I may be a little biased, but I think I love the Gym so much because I have seen firsthand from working there how many wonderful things kiddos can gain from these classes: physical, social, emotional development.

  • Is rocking her cloth diapers. We are almost 100% cloth now; she is only in sposies 2 days a week when she is with my sister and I am at work. My sister has said she doesn’t mind venturing into the cloth world on T/Th with Charlotte but we have quite a few size 2 sposies {which she is finally fitting in to} that were gifted to us in an awesome diaper cake – that’s just one less thing to get together on work mornings. And, since we are confessing all sins, I have to admit I will sometimes put Charlotte in a disposable just because I want her to wear a certain pair of pants that don’t normally fit her if she’s in a cloth, ha!

  • Is sitting up like a CHAMP! It happened so quickly. One minute she had absolutely no interest in sitting up and would fold over like a taco and gnaw on her feet any time I would prop her up; the next minute she was sitting unassisted and was rarely falling over, able to grab toys and play with them.
  • Loves music and is very content when we sing to her; she is very attentive to books, singing, and baby signs right now. I can tell she is understanding the meaning of quite a few words; it is so much fun to see her language developing and her personality is really reflected in her babbling and ‘talking’. I think we have a strong willed, very opinionated child on our hands!
  • Is itching to crawl but isn’t able to get her knees up under herself yet, which is a relief for me… and very frustrating for her. She isn’t stationary though, she will roll and shimmy her way around on the floor to get to toys, shoes, anything her little heart desires.
  • Is still only trying foods for taste and texture experience. So far on the yummy list: carrots, sweet potatoes, green beans, prunes, avocado and apple sauce {all made by me and frozen for convenience. so easy to do… really}. On the naughty list: bananas. I thought for SURE she would like bananas but the past 3 times they have been rejected and we are presented with a tightly closed mouth after the second bite. I am going to try at least 7 more times because research shows that it may take as many as 10 tries with a new food before a kiddo decides whether or not they truly like it or not. If you think about it, they are just learning to process the taste, temperature, texture, and smell of all kinds of new things all while refining their open-mouth-then-swallow skills. A baby may reject a food based solely on one factor of that bite {smell, temperature, etc}. I won’t give up on you bananas!
  • Is teething like crazy, but still only those 2 teeth on the bottom have come through. She will gnaw pretty much anything she can get her hands on; I don’t normally let her chew on her binky like she is in the video, but it was just so funny I didn’t want to pull it away from her.

  • Is still sporting the cockatoo hair plume in the back and the long bangs comb-over in the front. Very trendy. It seems to be getting a little better now that she is spending most of her awake time on her tummy or sitting up
  • Is waking up for at least one feeding throughout the night {remember a bit ago I told you she had stopped that and was sleeping 8+ hours and how I sort of missed our night-time snuggles? Well next time, tell me to can it! She must have heard me say I missed snuggling her in the middle of the night because she has been sacrificing and waking up at least once, sometimes 2 or 3 times, just to spend time with me. What a peach}.
  • We are still battling some sleep issues, but it is definitely improving. Around 5 months Charlotte really started struggling with going down to sleep. Starting at about 2 months old I made sure I never rocked her completely to sleep and that she was still pseudo-awake when she went down, we’ve kept the routine the same, etc. I really think she is entering the phase of development that includes comprehension of object permanence {i.e.: mommy still exists even when I can’t see her}. After a few ‘wake up, cry, mommy comes in to snuggle’ scenarios…. we’d reinforced a bad bedtime routine. I’ll go into more detail in another post but she is definitely getting better with both daytime napping and bedtime.

Here are some sneak peeks at her 6 month photos, taken by a friend and owner of Kreative Snaps Photography. We had a blast taking these photos. I can’t wait to see more!

I’ve really wanted to cry each time I typed ‘6 month old’ today. I LOVE this age. She’s the perfect amount of baby-baby and toddler- baby right now. Still loves to {and needs to} snuggle and be held but is also able to play with us, give us a laugh of anticipation and recognition, and express her feelings.

You’ll have to drag me kicking and screaming to 7 months.

DIY Thank-you notes for babies

Coming soon to a mailbox near you!

papa and honey

I saw this idea on Pinterest {of course} and knew it was something I wanted to try for Charlotte’s first thank you notes. It was fairly easy and took me only about an hour from start to finish {not including getting the pictures printed}; plus it was way more fun than writing!

The basket is one that I snagged at a thrift store and painted {using Pinterest inspiration as well}, then adorned with an old black belt from my closet {just my luck, I’m sure large black belts will be all the rage next year, just after I’ve glued my only one to a basket… the things we do in the name of adorable-ness}!

Once I had decided on the photo I wanted to use I modified the text for each gift then saved the document as the ‘gifters’ name to help me keep everything organized. It was so easy to then take them on an SD card to be printed. There are always print deals going on this time of year so the cost for this will not be more than a pack of thank you notes. I will just include each photo in along with my thank-you note so no additional postage will be needed!

I can’t wait to try this again for Charlotte’s birthday!

**UPDATE**

Something was bugging me about these thank-you notes but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I finally decided it was the ‘brightness’ of the text in the frame; just too abrasive. I use an online program called PicMonkey to edit my photos {It’s free and has a lot of really cool features to help fix the many booboos in my photos}. I chose a font called ‘chalkdust’ {for obvious reasons} and just discovered a handy little sliding bar titled “fade”. By increasing the ‘fade’ of the text I was able to reduce the ‘brightness’ {very technical terminology up in here}. Yay! Much better. Happy thank you note-ing!
