a secret garden…

actually, not so secret at all.

there is a wonderful public arboretum just down the road from our house.

It’s perfect for getting out of the house on a warm-ish spring morning.

It always surprises me how isolated it is…. come on people, this is God’s creation we’re talking about!

no matter… we would probably lose interest if it suddenly became popular (that’s just the way we are).

Baxter enjoys having free reign.

Baxter doesn’t like it when I get too far behind.

Relax pup, somebody’s got to document this adventure!

The end result is always peace and quiet from our 4 legged family member.

new addition to the family…

Meet Baxter.

Baxter is a Border Terrier. He is 11 weeks old in these photos.

We got Baxter in mid-January….but our quest for the perfect dog didn’t start there.

Chris has wanted another dog since having to put his first dog, Sammy, down a few years ago.

I’ll be honest – I have never been a ‘dog person’ .

Thinking back on my childhood, we had a turtle named Franklin. His tank smelled like fish and got scummy sometimes.

That is the extent of my pet experience.

Since the time we got engaged (many moons ago in January 2008), Chris has casually (and not so casually) brought up dogs and the fact of  ‘wanting another one’ in many conversations.

– If I had a dog, I would run more.

– When we get a dog, we can take him on camping trips

– Our dog will be well behaved and learn a lot of tricks

-You will feel safer at home with our dog

It wasn’t really an issue for me, because it was impractical to get one at the time.

Once we got married and moved into our new house, though, his comments became more frequent.

I was beginning to panic… “are we really about to get a dog”?!

Right off the bat, I expressed to Chris my ‘requirements’ for this dog….which may have a been a little excessive…but I didn’t want to agree to something that I couldn’t live with.

– no drool, no hair all over my house, no yappy barking, no chewing on my furniture… It continued on…for months as we researched various breeds.

I know that sounds ridiculous, and maybe ‘needy’….but I assure you that even allowing a dog in the house is very ‘generous’ on my part….the very definition of sacrificial love!

We finally came across this breed after nights of searching on the good ‘ol interwebs.

Many people think ‘border collie’ when we tell them…but a border terrier is very different.

You may recognize this fella, Baxter, from the movie Anchorman

I think he is a Border mix…but he’s a famous Border, nevertheless.

Very funny movie…and very quotable…

“I don’t know how to put this but I’m kind of a big deal”.

Anyway, after careful consideration, we got this little fella.

Of course Chris had to name him Baxter.

he is 17 weeks now

and we absolutely love him.

Finally!

Well, it’s about an hour past my bed-time….I was determined to finish editing my blog ‘header’ on my own.

Victory!

Now off to bed. I’m still nursing this silly bronchitis….but I don’t think I’m quite sick enough to call in to work tomorrow…. we’ll see how I feel in the AM.

2010 Rewind

We’ve all received those Christmas cards that include a carefully drafted letter from the sender, re-capping their family’s entire year’s accomplishments – “Suzie was pre-pre-accepted into Yale…at the age of 15”, “Tommy built an entire house for a homeless family… with his bare hands”, “Dad got the big promotion and found a cure for cancer”…. and on. and on.

Now don’t get me wrong, those are all wonderful things and I love to hear about what others are up to and the blessings God has given them….but I often wonder about the things that didn’t  make it into the letter.

What are the things they chose not  to tell you about this year?

I believe in being real.  I mean…. really real. That is, nobody is perfect…

(hmmm, suddenly I have the lyrics of a certain teen pop-sensation’s music running through my mind and I’m fighting the urge to do some fist pumps in the air along with the beat ‘Nobody’s perfect, I gotta work it again and again”…. alright, digress already).

So, in an effort to promote ‘real-ness’, I present you with our Christmas letter….

no filter.

just simply a real , honest-to-goodness narration of our year (+  photos ).

Yippee! Just what you always wanted!

This year:

Chris and Ashley helped paint and re-decorate an office building for an adoption agency.

Ashley was as bossy as usual

Ashley initiated a genius plan to spray paint, mod podge and glitter-ify a large bouncy ball.

She had good intentions. Honest!

No further comments.

Chris and Ashley bought their first home.

It came with this kitchen wallpaper (no extra charge).

They kept it for a while….just because it was certainly way

easier than actually doing something about it.

Chris took Ashley our for many dates to get ice cream over the summer.

So much so, that she almost couldn’t fit into her wedding dress.

Ashley mis-printed the wrong uncle’s name with the wrong family’s

name and address on a wedding invitation.

Chris discovered the error after everything had already been mailed off.

Ashley cried.

Ashley was late to her own rehearsal dinner because her nail appointment ran late.

There was also a spelling error in her apparently-not-so-carefully proofread home-made ceremony programs.

Ashley cried.

Chris and Ashley got a new camera.

Chris enjoys taking pictures of Ashley doing her usual stuff.

Ashley continues to use the coffee table as added height to see her full ensemble in the mirror before heading out the door.

The End

What do you think? Too much, too fast?

Well, I’d be interested to hear what you would share in your ‘real’ Christmas update letter.

…and, cue music and fist pumps!

Nobody’s perfect,

I’ve gotta work it

again, and again

‘til I get it right
